Hey guys,
Sorry I haven’t posted much in a while. To be honest, work and job hunting have sucked up a lot of my time, and I’m still working on a backlog of commitments, most of which I cannot post at this time since they’re for unreleased projects. I’m still working on serial illustrations for ’s original work, “The Soul Cycle”, which you can check out here:
www.nonaking.com/2013/07/seria…
I’m still trying to work off some of the lingering funk from 2013, but I’m hoping that some of my new projects will help. I’m trying to get all of my commitments off my chest right now so I don’t feel guilty about starting stuff I want to work on, though it will take a while. (I’ve got 20+ game illustrations to work on, plus approximately 21 more illustrations for “Soul Cycle”, not to mention another plush commission.) I also get a lot of flak for working on art things because then I’m not working/actively looking for a job, which is also pretty draining and demoralizing. The sooner I can move out on my own (and not with family), the better.
On a slightly happier note, I was tagged by , so here are a few things about me:
1. What was the last song you listened to with the 'repeat one' option?
“Dead Hearts” by Stars.
Also “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap, “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Ray, and, a personal favorite, “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay
2. Which is best, Tea or Coffee and what kind?
Depends on the mood, I like both, so long as they’re strong and sweet. Usually it’s coffee in the morning, and tea before bed.
3. Do you enjoy the simple pleasures of Daffy Dook?
Uhhhh….
4. What medium do you use in your art and what makes you think it has sparkle fairy magical girl powers?
My favorite medium is fabric and assorted textiles, *especially* ones that have glitter or gold on them (because I am a Jay, a literal Corvidae)
5. Speaking of which... if you were a magical girl, what would you be and what would your transformation item be?
Oh man, I honestly feel like I would be a villain more than a magical girl. I’d use that mirror from the Neverending Story to make people really look at who they are inside—if I used my powers for good, I would act as a mentor to help them confront and overcome their fears.
6. Do you focus on one story at a time or do they bombard you all at once (and at inappropriate times)?
In an ideal world, I’d be able to sit down and concentrate on one project until completion. More often then not, I find that when I’m working on one project, some crisis comes up and I lose my momentum or have to switch focus to handle whatever has happened.
I would say it’s sort of a mixture of the two: I have a hierarchy of storylines, where there are approximately five stories that I bounce between, depending on my mood and time I can comfortably commit to those (longer) stories. However, I also have over 60 idea kernels, short stories, or multiple plotlines that are percolating at the back of my head. I keep a diary of everything, mostly because I find that I’ll come up with a great plot point for a story I’m not working on at the moment, or I’ll get an idea for a really interesting character who doesn’t quite work in one of my established worlds. I file these away on my harddrive and think on them from time to time. Sometimes they’ll eventually end up as short stories, but I find it increasingly common for them to be the missing pivotal plot point I’ve been grappling with, or a key bit of character motivation, etc. Those are my “Aha!” moments, and it’s nice because I’ve already written down a good portion of the idea, so I can chop it from the idea list and pop it into its place in my story outline.
I’ve had to change tactics lately, though. I’m trying to focus on short stories right now, mostly so that I can boost my writing portfolio and boost my confidence in my writing abilities. I’m on the lookout for places to submit and publish my shorts, and I’m making it my goal to get either one thing published or fifty rejection letters, whatever comes first. I’ve already received one, so I guess that’s a start. (and that’s more than you reckoned for, sorry!)
7. What was the last thing you researched for a story or illustration?
…*cough*…. male anatomy…
But before that, I used some (provided) images for some “Soul Cycle” illustrations. I’ve also been researching a bit about the Aboriginal culture of Australia for an Assassin’s Creed fan quest that I’m working on, although that’s been really slow and relatively unproductive due to family-related stresses.
8. ok, you're a magical girl again- Who is your arch-nemisis?
Well, going on what I posted earlier, it would probably be myself, or my mirror-form.
9. Do you still have your old sketchbook/story journals from when you were in high school? (middle school, if you're attending high school)
Sure do! Some of the pictures are embarrassingly awful, while others have a quality that I would not be able to reproduce today.
10. Out of all the characters in your story, who do you think is close to being your muse?
Kest is hands down the character I tend to think of as my main muse, although others have their moments (particularly Grauwst). He’s appeared in some way or another in all of my stories, usually not by intention. In particular, his “Grauwst” rendition is most appropriate, not because he is a professional muse, but because he’s kind of awful at his job until he goes through this self-discovery process (which involves writing really trashy smut).
Thanks for reading, guys!
